Workshop on Library 2.0

Library 2.0 is a model of library service that includes constant, purposeful change and user participation in the creation and maintenance of services, while maintaining a primary goal of extending the library's reach to potential library users.

The volume and complexity of information is increasing exponentially causing libraries to use the Library 2.0 tools to access, organize, and disseminate information more efficiently. Subsequently, it has become imperative for libraries to absorb, adopt and provide IT-based services to the users. Keeping this trend in mind, and taking into consideration eight main components: (Digital Library-DSpace) for setting up a digital library, Koha as a tool for Integrated Library System (ILS), Wordpress for blogging, tagging and Web page design and Linux as an operating system, VuFind: integrating Koha and DSpace, PHP Programming and MySQL for enhancing the capacity of WordPress and Personality Development, HealthNet Nepal is organizing 3 months Training/ Workshop on Library 2.0.

The software mentioned here is a top of the line and internationally renowned software system for developing Library 2.0 concept, promoted by various organizations . The aim of the software is to empower users, particularly in universities, libraries, and other public service institutions.

There has been growing interest in the area of digitization, development of DLs (digital libraries), web page design and library automation in the country. The fundamental reason for developing the concept of Library 2.0 is the conviction that they will provide better delivery of information than was possible in the past. Since libraries today contain huge quantities of data, development of libraries based in the concept of Library 2.0 and subsequent customization would be very helpful for library professionals and end users.

The workshop on 'Library 2.0' aims to provide hands-on, basic, and advanced training to library and information professionals who are interested in implementing the concept of Library 2.0.

The workshop will be conducted at the HealthNet Nepal. Each participant will be provided a PC supplemented with LCD projected live demos. The pedagogy will be a mix of lectures, discussions, case studies and hands-on sessions. Each participant shall be provided with a Live DVD-ROM comprising of the DSpace, Koha ILS, WordPress, VuFind, PHP based on Linux OS, Personality Development. Extensive hands-on labs will be a hall mark of this program.

• The objective of the Workshop is to conduct one month rigorous and advanced training programme on Library 2.0 and sharing experiences in using the Open Source Software: Koha ILS, DSpace embedded with Vufind,Pazpar2-federated search, and WordPress to:
• Provide knowledge on digital libraries, web page design and automated library management technologies
• Empower information professionals and librarians in building efficient libraries based on the concept of Library 2.0 by providing:
• Training in digital libraries using basic and advanced feature of DSpace Software
• Educate and impart practical knowledge on Koha ILS applications, WordPress for creating dynamic website of libraries and Linux operating system with reference to Ubuntu. The workshop programme will include tutorial-type presentations, demonstrations, practical sessions, and will cover the following topics in Koha ILS, DSpace, WordPress and Linux Operating system.

7.30 am to 10.30 am / 9 am to 11 am (except Saturdays)

Note: Participants will be provided with a DVD-ROM, containing DSpace, Koha ILS, Vufind and WordPress software and other reading material related in the workshop.

The workshop is intended for library and information professionals, knowledge managers, information entrepreneurs, and e-content developers, who have the interests, initiatives, and need to set up libraries and information centres based on the concept of Library 2.0 and are interested. In order to provide individual attention, training facilities and to allow for rich and useful interactions, the number of participants in the workshop will be limited to 12(Twelve)
