BACKGROUND

There are betwen 200,000 and 300,000 people in Nepal with severe mental illness who need immediate care. Besides that, there are millions of people in the country with some kind of mental disorder. With simple treatment their (and hence their family’s) quality of life will improve significantly. However, human resources in the mental health is significant. There are only 16 psychiatrists working in Nepal, and there are less than 75 hospital beds for mentally ill patients int he country. Mental health (MH) is a grossly overlooked area. Till now, MH has had very little priority among the decision makers of the health policy. In response to such a widespread mental and psychological health problem in Nepal and lack of proper services, Mental Health Project (MHP) was launched in May 1989.
