Wordpress Training (5 days)

Over the past few years, the use of content management system to manage web content has become more popular. A content management system (CMS) is a web application that consists of a database that stores the website content, plus one or more web templates that control the layout of pages, including both the navigation features and the content. Once a user is logged into the CMS, he or she can add content to the site using a WYSIWYG editor. A CMS greatly simplifies website maintenance in several ways: by allowing multiple users to add or create content, and by allowing users who do not know HTML code to add content to the site.

WordPres was intended as a blogging platform; it can easily be used as a simple CMS and is very suitable for small- to medium sized websites. The Joomla CMS is user-friendly and is suitable for medium-sized web-sites. The Drupal CMS is very flexible and powerful, and is capable of running multiple large websites. WordPress has always provided its users with the ability to manage blog posts and static page content, as well as a way to manage tools for managing different types of media. These features make wordpress akin to a simple CMS. While not as full featured as a true open source CMS like Drupal or Joomla, WordPress provides basic CMS functionality that is appropriate for a small academic or public library site.

To get started with using wordPress as a CMS, you need to determine some basic information about your site architecture. What pages make up your site, and do they have subpages? What do you want your homepage to look like? What do you want your subpage to look like? Once you have determined this, you can look for, download, and install a theme that matches your basic needs. One of the biggest theme repositories is the WordPress Themes Directory (wordpress.org/extend/themes).
